Globally, environmental changes affect socioeconomic sectors and biodiversity, posing serious challenges to economic sectors. The industrial and macrofinancial sectors frequently overlook these risks, despite the fact that climate change alone threatens 18% of the world’s GDP. Over the past forty years, natural disasters such as storms, floods, droughts, heat waves, and biological invasions have caused damages worth trillions of US dollars. There will be a loss of US$2.5 trillion in discounted cash flows from the global portfolio of financial assets if climate change continues on its current pattern.
This project will employ an interdisciplinary approach, focusing on green data science at the intersection of global change and sustainable finance policy. The project will map and evaluate value chain risks from biodiversity loss drivers, highlight areas and stakeholders most vulnerable to physical and transition risks, and develop and harness a suite of quantitative and qualitative risk indicators to enable dynamic risk evaluation.

Requirements for PhD in Environmental Change Ireland
- Graduate: The Upper Second-Class Honors degree is required for research training in UK/ROI universities or other institutions of higher learning.
- International Students: For information on international qualification equivalents, please check the specific information for your country.
- English Language Requirements: Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required (*taken within the last 2 years).
Note: International students wishing to apply to Queen’s University Belfast (and for whom English is not their first language), must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English to benefit fully from their course of study or research. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for the English language for visa purposes.
