Potato Breeding for Stress Tolerance Suitability for Organic Farming: PhD Opportunity To Study in Germany

The Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) is a leading research institution in Germany, which is offering a fully funded PhD position to develop new potato varieties resistant to stress and suitable for organic farming. It is a great opportunity for international students to study in Germany.

Project:

Potato breeding for stress tolerance and processing suitability for organic farming (KarOLa)

This project aims to create the foundation for breeding new potato varieties specifically designed for organic farming. The research will focus on identifying genetic traits that improve tolerance against diseases and harsh environmental conditions (biotic and abiotic stresses). By implementing these traits in new varieties, we can promote sustainable and resource-conserving organic potato production.

Your Responsibilities

  • Plan, conduct, and analyze extensive field and lab tests, particularly focusing on resistance to late blight disease (a major potato threat).
  • Perform and interpret molecular analyses to understand the genetic basis of disease resistance in potato breeding lines.
  • Analyze and interpret data statistically using software like R or SAS.
  • Present research findings at meetings and conferences.
  • Write reports and scientific publications for peer-reviewed journals.
  • Train and guide technicians and student assistants.

Your Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Agricultural Sciences, Biology, or a related field.
  • Experience working with late blight (Phytophthora infestans) is a plus.
  • Strong foundation in genetics and practical experience with molecular techniques.
  • Proficiency in biostatistics and data analysis software (R or SAS preferred).
  • Excellent written and spoken English and German.
  • Valid driver’s license (class B) and willingness for occasional travel (company car provided) are advantages.
  • Enthusiasm for research and practical work, with strong teamwork and flexibility skills.

What will be Offerred
