This fully funded PhD thesis explores the importance of safe underground hydrogen storage for clean energy goals, focusing on protecting the integrity of hydrogen injection, storage, and retrieval wells.
Research Focus:
This project will investigate potential well integrity issues in underground hydrogen storage. The research will focus on:
We’ll evaluate integrity risks in new hydrogen injector/producer wells and assess feasibility and risks in repurposing existing oil and gas wells for hydrogen storage.
Project Objectives:
This research aims to:
- Identify well integrity risks associated with underground hydrogen storage.
- Develop strategies to mitigate these risks in new and repurposed wells.
- Support informed decision-making for safe and efficient hydrogen storage.
Building on Existing Research:
The project will leverage current research at Heriot-Watt University on risk-based well integrity modeling and assessment.
