Leiden University’s Faculty of Archeology is seeking a full-time PhD candidate to research the intersection of Field Archeology, education, and ethics. The candidate will join the Field Research Education Center and the Department of Archaeological Heritage and Society.
The research will lead to a PhD within a four-year timeframe. The candidate will be part of the Field Research Education Center (FREC), established in 2021 to strengthen alumni’s practical skills and employ-ability in the professional archeology market.

Key tasks
- Foster neighborhood and ground-breaking research in Critical Field Archeology Studies
- Support the comprehensive objectives of FREC
- Undertake research operations, like data compilation, management, processing and analysis to respond to the questions of study
- Collect critically and analyze meta-data from fieldwork
- Help in creating inclusive, sustainable and ethically sound best practices in fieldwork
- Publish and deliver presentations regarding work in international peer-reviewed journals and before academic and professional audiences independently or with other team members
- Encourage dialogues at faculty, department and FREC levels on research innovation initiatives
- Enroll for PhD courses based on an individual training plan including through the Graduate School
- Defend a PhD dissertation composed of several articles that were published in peer-reviewed academic journals dealing with a subject matter which is related to the aforementioned research topics within a period not exceeding four years.
Selection Criteria
PhD Candidate Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Archeology, Anthropology, or related field.
- Demonstrable ability for innovative, inter-disciplinary research.
- Experience in heritage studies and archaeological data collection.
- Active and critical research attitude.
- Good time-management, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Availability to travel and conduct research in/outside the Netherlands.
- Excellent command of English required for PhD thesis.
Also, the applicant must have an MSc. in Archeology, Anthropology or a related discipline and proof of zeal for stimulating academic work, as well as track record of undertaking and documenting any fieldwork done by them in the past.
This person should be good at working out a schedule, organizing tasks and conveying information clearly; they can work alone or in collaboration with others and should be willing to travel within the Netherlands or abroad to carry out research studies.
