To work in Luxembourg you need a long-stay visa (D) for more than 90 days that allows you to work. It is also known as national visas and are issued for one year and can be extended.

Get a Temporary Authorization to stay
If you have received a Job offer that requires you to work in Luxembourg for more than three months, a long-stay visa will be needed. Here is a look at the steps involved:
Before Entering the Country:
- You can apply for temporary permission to stay in the Ministry of Home Affairs General Immigration Department. (This is usually option exercised by an employer).
- Once you get the Temporary Authorization approval, apply for a Type D Visa at the nearest embassy/consulate belonging to Luxembourg in your home country.
After entering Luxemburg:
- Go through a Complete Medical Checkup (required for third-country nationals)
- You must apply for a temporary residence permit in Luxembourg.
Luxembourg Work Visa in 2024 Requirements:
- Have a Job offer from Luxembourg.
- Have a valid work contract with an employer in Luxembourg.
- Your employer must register your right of employment at the National Employment Agency (Agence pour le développement de l’emploi – ADEM).
- Clean Criminal Record.

Application Process Luxembourg Long Stay Work Visa:
- Temporary Authorization: The first step involves applying for a temporary authorization to stay in Luxembourg (“authorization de séjour temporaire”) through the Immigration Directorate. This application must be submitted and approved before you arrive in Luxembourg.
- D Visa Application: After you get a work permit, you can apply for a Type D visa at the Luxembourg embassy in your home country.
- Find the Luxembourg diplomatic and consular missions and select your country to find the visa process, visa application forms, fees, and requirements.
- Local Registration: Upon arrival in Luxembourg, register your presence with the local administration office within three working days.
- Medical Examination: Undergo a medical examination as required by the authorities.
- Residence Permit Application: Submit your application for a residence permit (“titre de séjour”) within three months of arrival.
Note:
In order to stay for more than one year one must apply for a temporary residence permit that is issued for at most five years.
Once you have resided in Luxembourg for a period of five years, you become eligible to apply for a permanent residence permit.
